Getting an older patient to bathe can be a struggle for many family caregivers. The biggest concerns are if they do not bathe, they could develop infections, produce a strong odor, or become aggravatingly itchy.

Harvard Health recommends showering or bathing at minimum several times a week. Here are a few tips for bathing aging adults to keep them healthy and clean while minimizing stress.

3 Tips for Bathing Aging Adults 

Make sure the environment is safe

  • Use a handheld shower device to avoid spraying them in the face. 
  • Make sure the bath water is at a comfortable temperature.

Consider opting for a sponge bath

Bathing and showering are the best ways to clean the body, but if this is not possible, a sponge bath is a good alternative solution. Here’s a helpful step-by-step guide on how to give a sponge bath. 

  • Gather all the supplies you will need and make sure your older adult is nice and warm. 
  • Start from the face and head and move down the body. Clean the private areas last. 
  • For privacy and warmth uncover only the body part that is being washed. 
  • Be sure to use gentle strokes. Remind yourself their skin is far more sensitive. 
  • Use a different washcloth for each area so you do not transfer dirt by using dirty washcloths. Remember, the goal is to get them as clean as they would get from an actual shower or bath.

Bathroom Comfort

  • Change your faucet turners to levered handles. Changing them will make turning on your sink and tub more accessible. 
  • Install grab bars. Having something to hold onto as you get in and out of the tub helps keep you safe if your arthritis flares up. 
  • Invest in a shower seat. These simple seats fit right in the shower stall or tub and can help you conserve energy as you shower. 
  • Elevate your toilet seat. When your toilet seat is higher, this can reduce the strain you might feel from getting on and off a lower traditional seat. 

Living Room and Dining Room Comfort

  • Look into touchless lamps or an alarm system that will turn things on using voice activation. 
  • Find the perfect pillow. Most people with arthritis prefer a cervical pillow because you can keep your neck comfortable. 
  • For doorknobs, you can change them all to levers for easier access or get rubber knob covers that are easier to turn and grip.

What is a Shower Chair?

Before we discuss the assorted styles of shower chairs, just what is a shower chair? According to Chair Institute, “A shower chair is typically a four-legged chair with rubberized feet, usually made with aluminum legs and a durable plastic seat used to provide additional support in the bath or shower and to make getting in and out of the bath and shower easier.”

Folding Shower Seat

This sturdy assistive bathroom aid is a favorite among customers. The seat stays installed in the shower and folds up when not used. When users go into the shower, they only need to pull the seat down, and voila, a shower seat. These seats usually have a grab bar nearby to supply an added level of safety. 

Transfer Bench

Transfer benches are extremely helpful when moving from a wheelchair to a shower bench. It has two rubberized feet placed outside the tub, with the other two inside the tub. The rubberized feet supply a sturdy grip on the floor. The user slides across the wheelchair to the bench.

Your Accessible Home Checklist

1. Entryway to Home

You will need to invest in a wheelchair ramp or a vertical platform installed at the front door. We also offer thresholds which allow mobility devices to maneuver over a front entry step.

This can help an aging adult enter the home with more ease. Lastly, make sure there is plenty of lighting in your entryway.  

2. Throughout the Home

  • Doorways need to have a 36-inch width to allow wheelchairs and walker devices room to maneuver. 
  • Area rugs are trip hazards. It is best to put away all area rugs. 
  • If the home is a 2-story, consider installing a stairlift or elevator to help you access your bedroom.
  • If you are in a wheelchair, to turn comfortably, you need a 60-inch open radius. Therefore, make sure furniture is arranged so you can move easily. 

3. In the Kitchen 

  • Arthritis or developing weakness can make turning knobs difficult. Instead, consider a touchless or lever handle faucet.
  • Move everyday items to accessible places and consider hide-away or pull-out cabinets for easier use. 

4. In the Bathroom 

  • The bathroom needs to be at least 5 feet by 8 feet to fit a wheelchair comfortably. 
  • Floors can become slippery. Installing non-slip flooring or non-slip mats can prevent falls. You can also include the non-slip mats in the bathtub. 
  • A shower chair and a hand-held shower needs to be installed in the shower. 
  • Grab bars need to be placed strategically throughout the bathroom. 
  • A walk-in-tub should be considered sooner than later. Stepping over a bathtub is a leading cause of severe falls for older adults.

Lastly, a ceiling lift for safe transfer is a fantastic solution to help if you or your loved one have limited mobility. A caregiver can assist with transfer from bed to chair or from room to room.

Disability Day is on December 3rd by the International Day of People with Disabilities, dedicated to bringing awareness and compassion for the challenges faced by people with disabilities. The theme for this year is leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post-COVID- 19 world. With this goal, they hope to recognize the challenges, barriers, and opportunities for people with a disability.

Since March 2020, when COVID-19 began, many people were affected by drastic changes, such as working and primarily staying at home, being away from our loved ones, and masks. However, those with disabilities had several negative repercussions from COVID-19. Their social isolation was more pronounced, and there was a lack of emergency equipment to help individuals with specific needs.

Why Do We Celebrate Disability Day? 

According to the United Nations, the first annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons began in 1992. Since then, the day is celebrated to help create change and bring awareness for people with disabilities.  

Themes from Previous Years:

Since 1992, there have been several different celebrated themes. Some include: 

  • 2014: Sustainable development – the promise of technology 
  • 2012: Removing Barriers, open doors for an inclusive society and development for all 
  • 2007: Decent work for people with disabilities. 
  • 2002: Independent living and sustainable livelihoods 
  • 1998: Arts, culture, and independent living
